ABOUT THE POSITION

Orthopaedic Associates of Muskegon (OAM) is seeking a Nurse (RN / LPN) to join our Nursing team. The Nurse role is a multi-skilled, licensed, healthcare provider who is the primary point of contact between the patient and the physician. They utilize effective listening skills to collect sufficient data in order to adequately assess the needs of the patient. When working the phones under the direction of physicians, the Nurse will provide clinical support functions and professional nursing care to patients. Must be compassionate yet have the ability to communicate effectively. Works in collaboration with the physician, utilizing nursing skills to assess and help develop a treatment plan for the patients. In addition to patient education, the Nurse also advises patients how to manage medical/orthopaedic needs, as well as providing appropriate emotional support to the patients of OAM.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Greets patients and escorts them to exam rooms as needed
  • Provides education to patients regarding: Surgical procedures
  • Pre and post operative instructions
  • Medications
  • Injuries/muscular and skeletal problems
  • Exercise
  • SNRI injections
  • Compiles patient health information for pre-surgical work-up; including the patients’ health history
  • Review all lab results and take additional measures as needed on abnormal results
  • Track / Review all medical clearances ensuring the patient is optimized for surgery
  • Communicate with PCP offices on abnormal labs, medications to hold, and additional topics as needed
  • Completion of surgical orders inclusive of:
  • All preoperative lab work
  • Any specialty testing/ clearances
  • Specialty equipment
  • Maintains accurate and legal documentation at all times
  • Maintains patient confidence and protects OAM operations by keeping information confidential
  • All aspects of wound care inclusive of:
  • Suture/staple removal
  • Dressing change
  • Receives and responds to all phone calls and messages the same day received.
  • Document all encounters in:
  • Phone message book
  • Patient chart
  • Electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Assesses the needs of the patient based on the information provided
  • Post operative complications
  • Drug reactions
  • Other immediate needs
  • Educates or advises patients, family members, or care givers on treatment or care plans as needed.
  • Assists physicians with exams and minor office procedures
  • Assist physicians with EMR needs
  • Preparing and administering medications per physician order
  • Observes principals of sterile technique in performing duties
  • Practices OSHA safety standards
  • Utilizes Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills if required
  • Provides guidance to M.A.s as needed
  • Follows appropriate legal and ethical professional conduct
  • Triage phone issues as needed
  • Attends scheduled meetings with Supervising Nurse, physicians, or other administrative staff
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION & REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have proficient computer skills
  • Must possess strong listening, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Must be a people-oriented individual with empathy for patients
  • Must possess excellent telephone skills and office etiquette
  • Must have ability to function independently but also contribute to team efforts as needed
  • Must possess effective use of proper grammar, spelling, and medical terminology
  • Must possess the ability to receive and comprehend instructions verbally and in writing
  • Must have the ability to use logical reasoning for simple and complex problem solving
  • Must be able to prioritize, multi-task, and work well under pressure
  • Must have the ability to effectively communicate information to patients, physicians, and clinician
